Saccharin

Saccharin (aka saccharine), often used in the form of sodium saccharin, is an artificial sweetener with effectively no nutritional value. It is about 550 times as sweet as sucrose but has a bitter or metallic aftertaste, especially at high concentrations. Saccharin is used to sweeten products such as drinks, candies, cookies, and especially for masking the bitter taste of some medicines.

Examples of use of SACCHARIN
1. It was discovered at a time when saccharin and cyclamates were increasingly accused of being carcinogenic.
2. At a recent gathering, they linked arms, swayed, and sang saccharin songs about friendship.
3. The saccharin–fed rats went on to consume more calories and put on more weight and body fat.
4. Scientists at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, fed some rats with yogurt sweetened with saccharin and others with yogurt sweetened with glucose, a natural sugar.
5. "The data clearly indicate that consuming a food sweetened with no–calorie saccharin can lead to greater body–weight gain than the same food sweetened with high– calorie sugar," say the U.S. team behind the research.
